Richard
The info and insight you share is good to hear - and actually, about the kind of honest expression of 'how things are' that I can appreciate, and certainly Do!
We are romantic enough to believe we could make a home in the Skye environment, but sensible to know that it would take a commitment as well as an open mind. Just one question: How do you think locals would take to Yanks making their home on their lovely island?
Thanks,
Dodd

At a guess, at least half the current resident population of Skye are 'incomers' (including us)! Most are from England, but there are other nationalities here too. All the people here are really friendly and supportive of each other, so if you are minded to fit in with the people who are already here, I don't think you would find any 'resistance' at all. Do not hesitate to ask more questions if you think I can be of help!

Hi, I'm guessing you are thinking about relocating to Skye... No matter how quiet your part of Somerset, Skye will be VERY different. Think long and hard if you really want to be such a long way from your present friends and family. Experience as much time as possible on Skye in winter. It can be very cold, dark and bleak here. I'm happy with that, but will you and your family be OK with it?

Permanent full time jobs on Skye are very seldom advertised - there really are not many to be had, and those that exist often go to people 'in the know'. NHS jobs would be advertised in the local newspaper, the West Highland Free Press, which can be ordered online to be delivered to you by post. Search online for WHFP Skye.

There is only one secondary school on Skye - Portree High School. You would need to do your own research into its ability to support your daughter through secondary education.

Best wishes!
